Good solutions can't be cherry-picked

Ever noticed how political discussions between partisans has more cherry-picking of facts going on than a cherry-pickers convention? They refuse to even acknowledge the truth of a fact that weighs against their perspective. But to solve problems well, we need to pick up all the cherries in the bowl, weigh all the facts affecting the problem... Don't wait for the politicians, it's going to have to be the people who insist that there is a whole bowl of cherries, not just two.

About The Village Square and Leadership NEXT

The Village Square is a nervy bunch of liberals & conservatives who think that disagreement, dialog & discernment of fact make for good decisions, a good time and a good country. Find us online HERE. Leadership NEXT is the next generation's opportunity to jump in. Our online manifesto: 1. Civility first, last and always 2. Facts matter 3. There's no such thing as underage thinking. So pull up a chair.

They met, they ate, they were civil... again. (Left to right: Vanessa, Lindsay, Luke, Vita, Gail & Eden.. Adam was almost certainly working too hard for a picture)

as per usual, the economist article - briefs us very nicely on why Obama should have - and shouldn't have - gotten the prize :) Enjoy! http://www.economist.com/world/international/displayStory.cfm?story_id=14626903&source=most_commented

I would also like to tie in our earlier discussion about the role that race plays in people's attitude toward Obama. What we all did seem to agree on, at least, was that there are people who do not see this presidency as legitimate. Whether or no...

In America we're very insulated from the huge hit America's leadership took in the world during the Bush Administration. If we lived in almost any other country in the world, we'd have a profound sense of this stunning reversal in world opinion to...

I'm with Luke - it's a little like if they had nominated me for my law degree during my first week of school. sure, I wish they had done that. but still...

I love Obama, but I do believe this was a little premature. The nomination deadline was 11 days after he was sworn in. It's only going to add to the Right's fire that Obama is a mere celebrity. The committee explanation definitely cleared things u...

I think he and everyone else should be insulted that the commander and chief of the entire U.S. military is given any sort of peace prize during a time of war.

The committee has said that "Obama has as president created a new climate in international politics. Multilateral diplomacy has regained a central position, with emphasis on the role that the United Nations and other international institutions can...

I think obviously race isn't as big to us as it is to our parents and older generations. Part of that is because we've always grown up with integrated schools and neighborhoods. I do however, think race is still a big problem in this country. I do...

Great discussion. Glad I dropped by. Love the online civility bell too (Erin, we've got one at the dinners, if you haven't been. Sometimes they ring it on me if I talk a little too long. Eek.) A couple of random thoughts... We are suffering horrib...
