Good solutions can't be cherry-picked

Ever noticed how political discussions between partisans has more cherry-picking of facts going on than a cherry-pickers convention? They refuse to even acknowledge the truth of a fact that weighs against their perspective. But to solve problems well, we need to pick up all the cherries in the bowl, weigh all the facts affecting the problem... Don't wait for the politicians, it's going to have to be the people who insist that there is a whole bowl of cherries, not just two.

About The Village Square and Leadership NEXT

The Village Square is a nervy bunch of liberals & conservatives who think that disagreement, dialog & discernment of fact make for good decisions, a good time and a good country. Find us online HERE. Leadership NEXT is the next generation's opportunity to jump in. Our online manifesto: 1. Civility first, last and always 2. Facts matter 3. There's no such thing as underage thinking. So pull up a chair.

They met, they ate, they were civil... again. (Left to right: Vanessa, Lindsay, Luke, Vita, Gail & Eden.. Adam was almost certainly working too hard for a picture)

I'm wrote a blog for the website concerning this. America politics today is less about equal representation and more about a race to the majority. The unfortunate part is that Americans are the victims, to the tune of 46 million Americans without he…

This was the name of an opinion piece in the New York Times a few weeks ago that I found very interesting. It discusses the filibuster and how its use has changed over time. One part of this article suggests that due to the fact that Senators no lon…

While I think you can take the polite "Happy Holidays" too far by mandating it rigidly or being somehow offended if people say "Merry Christmas" (and I think gentle reminders from the right don't hurt to remind when we might take political correctne…

I agree that a lot of it is overstated. If anything I think we should be more open to other cultures. Christmas is a time of love and peace and happiness and sould remind us all that we are all part of the race of mankind. I think the bigger problem…

Every December there seems to be talk about a "War on Christmas". I see bumper stickers that say "Keep Christ in Christmas" and members of Congress propose bills to discourage schools and other public places from removing Christmas Trees and religio…

I like that phrase, "sloppy thinker" . When time and money aren't on your side (a bill may or may not be passed, you've got limited air time, etc.), explaining context or getting to the meat remains important but not urgent.
